Discussion:
[tex-k] disappearing inserts

Hi--

On a new ubuntu installation, I noticed that some midinserts are
disappearing into the ether on me; I'm using texlive 2009-13 on ubuntu
11.10. The same code works perfectly on my 10.04 machine with
2009-7. I have a "figure" macro that uses midinsert; I changed the
midinsert to a topinsert, and *every* figure disappeared, and indeed
the midinserts that disappear are the ones that are converted to
topinserts.

All non-standard macro packages are the same on the two machines, and
the plain.tex files are identical. I even tried copying the tex
executable from the good system to the problem system, and the problem
persists.

This is very mysterious to me--where else could such a problem be?

Thanks,
David

Wild guess: different poppler versions breaking tex (again)?

Hi--

Some midinserts are disappearing into the ether on me, using texlive
2009-13 on ubuntu 11.10. The same code works perfectly on my 10.04
machine with 2009-7. I haven't looked at very many examples, but it
possibly happens when the insert won't fit on the current page and
should migrate to the next page--at least on the first one I noticed
this is the case.

I turned on tracingall, and the insert appears to be processed, though
I haven't tried to parse everything. In particular there seems to be a
trace of the figure number being written to the aux file, but it
doesn't actually show up there and TeX complains about an undefined
reference.

I'm using plain tex with a variety of macro packages, but again,
pretty much everything is the same on both machines, other than
texlive files which may have changed.

I realized this isn't enough to diagnose the problem, but has anyone
had anything similar happen?

Thanks,
David

More information on the mysterious disappearing inserts:
I replaced midinserts with topinserts, and every figure
disappeared. The plain.tex files are identical on the two
installations, and I copied the tex executable from a machine that
works properly to the broken one, and it's still broken.

I don't think it's poppler--I'm using tex, not pdftex.

Sorry for the multiple postings--it didn't seem to go through at
first, which I attributed to the email address I originally signed up
with not matching my posting email address.
